Animal Facts

Squirrel Info:

Gray squirrels are the most frequent invaders of homes in the Kansas City metro area. Gray squirrels are active year round and usually breed twice a year, in mid to late winter and again in late summer. Two to four young are born several weeks later. The young usually remain with mom until the next litter comes along. Squirrels are opportunists and can exploit any weakness they find in roof lines, soffits, facias, and vents. This is especially true if you have wood shake shingles.

Nuisance Concerns:

Since squirrels often use homes and buildings as “their homes”, they can damage your home in several ways. Squirrels can use an existing hole or create their own by chewing through wood shingles, fascias, and soffits. Squirrels can also chew through roof vents and screens. This contamination can result in a biohazard risk to the dwelling’s occupants. Great Plains Wildlife and Pest Contol Services LLC can remove soiled insulation, decontaminate the affected areas and install new insulation in your attic.

Moles:

Moles are very common in the Kansas City area. The Eastern Mole is the most common in this area. Moles live under the ground, and the nuisance problem they cause is because of their digging.

Nuisance Concerns:

Surface tunnels, ridges or mounds of dirt in the lawn. These are a result of the Moles travels in their search for food.
Many people take great pride in the care of their lawns and landscaping, and are very disturbed to see tunnels and mounds of dirt all over their lawns and flower beds and wish to trap and remove moles from the property.

The only real way to solve a problem with moles is to trap and remove them. In fact, if your yard is full of tunnels and dirt mounds, it’s probably the result of a single mole’s activity. Moles have a very high metabolism, and they are very active – they can dig up 18 feet an hour under good soil conditions. They are also largely territorial except during the breeding season. In the Kansas City area the average yard with Mole damage contains one or two Moles. but they can really make a mess of your lawn or flower beds. To solve the mole problem the mole has to be captured and removed. The use of traps, such as spear traps, scissor traps, or underground clamp traps are the most effective tools for Mole removal.

GPWS offers two different solutions for Mole control. Solution one is we come out on a service call to inspect your property; traps are placed to capture the Moles causing the damage. The traps are checked regularly until all moles have been captured and removed from your lawn. The cost for solution one is based on a service call fee to inspect and set traps. Then we charge a fee for each mole that we capture and remove. This service is geared toward customers that have the occasional mole problem in their lawn.

Solution two is a six month maintenance contract. This is geared for the customer that has reoccurring mole problems over and over. This program is based on a flat rate fee to cover the entire 6 month period for unlimited mole removal.

Groundhog Control

Groundhogs, or Woodchucks as they are often called, are a common nuisance animal in the Kansas City Metro area.

Nuisance Concerns:

  • Digging burrows under porches or decks.
  • Destroying Crops or Gardens
  • Digging tunnels next to foundations creating drainage problems
  • Groundhogs are not aggressive or dangerous in any way, but they can cause damage by digging and the destruction of gardens.Great Plains Wildlife Services will trap and remove the offenders and remove them from your property.

Raccoon Info:

Raccoons are a familiar animal in the Kansas City metro area. They are easily recognized by their black mask and ringed tails. Raccoons are very agile and can easily climb trees, downspouts, and shrubbery to gain access to roofs. Once on roofs, they are very good at pulling up shingles, roof vents or soffits to gain entry into homes and businesses. Raccoons are omnivores and will eat almost anything. They are frequent raiders of bird feeders and trash cans here in the Kansas City area. Raccoons breed in late winter to early spring, often choosing attics and fireplace chimneys to rear their young.

Nuisance Concerns:

Raccoons, once they gain access to roofs can pry open roof vents, soffit vents, gable vents and even pull open offits and shingles from your home to gain entry. Raccoons can cause extensive damage to your attic by contaminating the insulation with feces and urine. Raccoons can pose a serious health hazard to pets. They carry a number of parasites and diseases such as canine distemper, rabies, and roundworm. Every effort should be made to remove raccoons feces and urine contaminated insulation from attics that have been “homes” to Raccoons. Raccoon damage is often covered by homeowners insurance. Great Plains Wildlife and Pest Control Services LLC can help with this process.

Bird & Pigeon Control

  • Birds, pigeons, in particular, are a common nuisance animal in the Kansas City area.
  • Pigeons are common in urban environments and cause the following problems:
  • Pigeons leave droppings in public areas.Pigeons roosting on beams, store signs, etc.
  • Pigeons roosting on beams, store signs, etc.Pigeons living in a home or building attic.
  • Pigeons living in a home or building attic.
  • Pigeon control is an important part of nuisance wildlife control in the KC metro area.
  • Pigeons often choose to roost on or in buildings, and their droppings are not only unsightly and caustic but unsanitary.

They love the ledges of buildings, store signs, beams and poles, parking garages, gas stations, and pretty much any semi-protected architecture with a flat surface. Once they’ve established a roost, they stay.

Diseases: Pigeons carry a number of parasites and mites, which can infest the nesting areas and feathers. However, the most common concern with pigeons is histoplasmosis, a lung disease that humans can contract from the fungal spores that grow on pigeon droppings. If the droppings are allowed to accumulate, they serve as a fertile growth area for this fungus.

Birds in Attics:
Certain birds, pigeons in particular, like to live in the attics of homes and buildings. This poses a health risk to the building’s inhabitants. In homes, people are often bothered by the noise the pigeons make when roosting in an attic, and they leave a lot of droppings behind.

Starlings also cause problems in this area. The most common are:

  • Starlings building nests in dryer or bathroom exhaust vents. This is common in the spring time.
  • Starlings entering soffit areas to build nests.
  • Starlings entering roof vents to enter the attic area. This often results in a “hay stack” nest under the vents in the attic area. This material is often from Starling using this area for many years.
